The cope is a traditional vestment used in the Mass by priests and bishops. It is open in the front and closed with an ornamented clasp known as a morse. It features a decorative shield on the back which is known as the hood and may also have decorative bands known as orpheys. We have a variety of beautiful copes from Poland, England and the United States with embroidery from simply elegant to stunningly complex.
The cope is also worn during exposition of the Blessed Sacrament when the priest is incensing the monstrance and performing the benediction.
