As of July 7, 2007, the Tridentine Mass (pre-Vatican II form of the liturgy) is being permitted on a wide scale again for the first time since the Council.
Please read the text of Pope Benedict XVI’s motu proprio Summorum Pontificum of July 7, for more details on the permission to celebrate the Latin Mass.
The 1962 Missal is officially called the “Extraordinary Form” because the “Ordinary Form” is the post-Vatican II liturgy that most people are used to and unofficially being called the Missal of Blessed Pope John XXIII since he was the pope who promulgated the final version of the Missal before Vatican II.
