The seven virtues are divided into two categories. The first four virtues (temperance, wisdom, justice, and fortitude) are known as the cardinal virtues. These four virtues are the virtues of classicism and were practiced by Christians and pagans alike.
The remaining three virtues (faith , hope, and charity) are known as the theological virtues and are considered to be Christian in nature.
When a holy person is first recommended for sainthood, the first part of the investigation involves determining if the person was virtuous. This doesn’t mean they want to see if the person did virtuous acts, but whether or not virtue had become a habitual way of life.
Browse this category to find books that will inspire you to make virtue the center of your life. To understand the virtues better we recommend Pope Benedict XVI’s collection of homilies called The Virtues.
