Following on the success of his highly praised recording of Handel's Saul (not to mention ecstatic reviews for La Clemenza di Tito) René Jacobs now turns his attention to Messiah, in the 1750 version with two alto soloists. Messiah was the brainchild of Charles Jennens (1700-73), the cultivated and erudite son of an English landowner enriched by his family’s iron business. Like many sincere Christians of his time, Jennens was disturbed by the increase of enlightenment freethinking and contempt for fundamentalist religion. Christian doctrine was under attack, and Messiah is Jennens’ defense of the central Christian teaching that Jesus was the redeemer through whom god revealed himself. Jennens’ selection of texts emphasizes the benevolence of god and the community of believers, rather than (as in Bach’s Passions) the suffering of Christ and the responsibility of the individual. Jacobs, along with a superb group of soloists and The Choir of Clare College performed Messiah on an extensive tour last year that culminated with this glorious new recording for harmonia mundi.
