MagnifiKid - A Children's Guide for the Mass
I've been a subscriber to Magnificat Magazine for a few years now and was delighted to get the opportunity to review their children's version, MagnifiKid. The publication is for young Catholics age six to twelve years so naturally this review will also include feedback from an enthusiastic participate; my six year old son.
MagnifiKid is a small magazine [16 pages] that is published weekly and works to develop in children a better understanding of the mass. It is a misellette for children, essentially. Taken to mass, a child can follow along in the readings and responses. It is perfectly designed to fit into the formation that 6-12 year old receive in preparation for their sacraments. I highly recommend this as the perfect gift for first communicants.
The publication includes the readings and Gospel acclamations for the week followed by information about saints or fe Full Review...
MagnifiKid!: A must have for your elementary school aged children
My seven year old daughter spent the past year using a missal geared to children preparing to receive their First Holy Communion. It's a great missal, but it lacks the readings for Sunday Mass. I found it to be a deficiency that lead to my daughter becoming distracted and bored. She was trying to use her children's missal to follow along and respond at the proper times and was using the missal that our church has in the pews for the reading. This proved to be too much for her. She got lost trying to find the proper page in the adult missal, the type was too small for her and the missal itself, was a bit too heavy for her to manage comfortably. I thought that this was a situation we simply would have to deal with until she was older. Then I discovered MagnifiKid!.
I noticed a boy a couple of years older than my daughter with a copy of MagnifiKid! at Mass a few months back. The bright colors initially caught my eye and upon further inspect Full Review...
My Kids Love These!
We've been gettng Magnifikids since my oldest learned to read several years ago, and before that I would get them for the godchildren. My son, now age 9, still loves them.
Each issue contains the full text of the Sunday's mass, including a note where there is more than one option (such as the opening prayer said by the priest). Parts of the Mass are color-coded so kids can see which parts they say, and which are said by the priest. There are of course the usual directions to sit, stand or kneel where appropriate.
In addition, there is a cartoon ("Brother Goodventure"), a puzzle page, a suggested activity tied to the week's readings, and a prayer page. Sometimes there are additional educational pages, and they are always top notch. One of my favorites was an explanation of a typical day of benedictine hours of prayer. We save our back-issues because the kids love to re-read them.

Perfect for getting children excited about Mass.
I have a 5 year old, a 3 year old, and an 18 month old, all of them benefited from MagnifiKid. I honestly thought my 5 year old would be the only one to really get anything out of it, but I was completely wrong. We used MagnifiKid as a way to prepare for the Sunday readings and practice proper Mass behavior. The difference this made for all of them has been amazing. The first week I wasn't sure if I had actually brought my children or somehow picked up look alikes along the way.
When MagnifiKid arrived I wasted no time sitting down with my oldest to share it with her, read through it, and answer her questions. Shortly aft Full Review...
