Hildegard of Bingen was a Renaissance woman of the Middle Ages, called the Sibyl of the Rhine.  She entered the Benedictines at eight years old and was elected abbess as a young woman. She was the first of the great German mystics, a poet and prophet, author of hymns and music, a physician and political moralist, who advised 4 popes, princes, bishops and laymen. She lived to be 80 and headed communities of both men and women. Her feast day is September 17.
