In 1830 a young nun named Sister Catherine Labore had three visions of Mary at her convent in Paris. Mary asked her to have the Miraculous Medal created and promised to give generously of her grace to all who wore it. The first medal was struck in 1832 and in 1894 Pope Leo XIII established a feast for the Congregation of the Mission to celebrate the Miraculous Medal.
The Miraculous Medal is now the most popular piece of Marian jewelry and is also found as part of four way medals.
