Stephen (Steven, Stefan, Stefano, Esteban) [died c. 35], the Protomartyr, the first of seven deacons chosen by the apostolic community of Jerusalem. St. Stephen was the first Christian martyr and is apt patron of those who must give witness to their convictions before a hostile audience. He is also patron of bricklayers, deacons and of Hungary. His feast is December 26.
