Rose (Rosa) [1586-1617], first saint of the Americas to be canonized, is patron of the New World, especially of South America and Peru. She was a friend of St. Martin de Porres. She died after a protracted illness at the age of thirty-one. Because of her loving care of the destitute and old, she is their special patron. She is also the patron of florists, gardeners, of India and the Philippines. Her feast is August 23.
