(Margarita, Margherita, Marguerite, Margarete) [1287-1320], virgin. She was born grossly deformed, a midget, hunchback, lame and totally blind. Her parents were ashamed of her & hid her away. When she was six or seven, they took her to Castello, hoping for a cure. When none happened, they abandoned her there. Some women of the town took her in. At fifteen, she became a Dominican tertiary, visited prisoners, helped the sick, comforted the dying and looked after the children while their parents worked. Many miracles have been attributed to her. She is patron of the unwanted and abandoned. Her feast is April 13.
