Fr. John F. Russell, O.Carm. has been a Carmelite friar since 1954. He was ordained to the priesthood in 1960. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree, majoring in Philosophy, from St. Bonaventure University. Father Russell studied in Rome at Lateran University where he received a Bachelor in Sacred Theology (S.T.B.), and a Licentiate in Sacred Theology (S.T.L.). He earned his Doctorate in Sacred Theology (S.T.D.) from Catholic University of America in 1979.
Father Russell has had an association with Immaculate Conception Seminary, the graduate school of theology at Seton Hall University in South Orange, New Jersey, for over twenty-two years, teaching Christian Anthropology and a variety of courses in Christian and Carmelite spirituality. He served as the Spiritual Director at Immaculate Conception Seminary from 1995 to 2000. Father Russell was elected in June, 2002 to serve as the Prior Provincial of the Carmelite Province of the Most Pure Heart of Mary. He served as Provincial until 2005. Presently, he teaches at Immaculate Conception Seminary at Seton Hall University. In the spring of 2009, Pope Benedict XVI awarded Father Russell the Benemerenti Medal for his exceptional service to the Catholic Church.
Fr. Russell has published chapters in books and articles in such publications as The Irish Theological Quarterly, Carmelus, Downside Review, Church, Pastoral Life, Studies in Spirituality, Spiritual Life, Review for Religious, and others. He has cassette programs published by Alba House Communications: “Becoming Spiritually Mature,” “A Path to a Contemplative Heart,” “A Journey with St. Therese of Lisieux: Doctor of the Church,” and “Transforming Nothingness into Fire.”
