[died c. 300], an officer of the Imperial Army during the reign of Diocletian, resigned his commission, was arrested, suffered cruel torment, and was put to death because he would not execute a patently unjust command. St. George is patron for soldiers, policemen, and for all whose duty requires them to exercise the coercive power of government. He is known as the model of knighthood and avenger of women. The Boy Scouts have him as their patron and he is the Patron Saint of England, Portugal and Germany. His feast is April 23.
