Mary, Mother of the Son by Mark Shea

I've been seeing mention of this series on Mark's blog for some time and they have finally arrived!

Mary, Mother of the Son is a three-volume set from Catholic Answers that seems to be a pretty comprehensive look at the Blessed Virgin Mary.

In Book 1, Modern Myths and Ancient Truths, Mark Shea first addresses common misconceptions and blatant falsehoods about Mary and then delves into Scripture to show that the Mary of the Catholic Church is really in Scripture and not something made up from pagan and other sources.

Book 2, First Guardian of the Faith, addresses the Marian dogmas. Mark covers the Theotokos, Immaculate Conception, Assumption and Perpetual Virginity in great detail. He first starts with common objections and misconceptions from other Christians and then jumps into Scripture, early Church Fathers, saints and, in some cases, even Protestant defenders of each doctrine.

Then he explains why these dogmas, which may seem completely irrelevant today, are actually essential to our understanding of the Church and our place in the world.

Book 3, Miracles, Devotions, and Motherhood, is the book to hand to Evangelicals who get queasy when the word “rosary” is mentioned. Mark goes through the rosary, apparitions, honor given to Mary and private revelation in a way that both explains the topics in an apologetic way to Evangelicals but also gives plenty of education to Catholics who may not know the “why” behind these topics.

All in all, this looks like a great series that I'm looking forward to reading.
