Google Analytics and IE6

One of our customers reported to us today that he uses Internet Explorer 6 and our site suddenly stopped coming up a couple of days ago. He was getting the following error:

Internet Explorer cannot open the internet site ”   ”  operation aborted.

After clicking the Okay button he would get a Page not found error.

I browsed for this kb article from Microsoft and found that javascript can cause this if a particular method (“appendChild” or “innerHTML”) is called in the code.

I knew that we had done some javascript work in the last few days so I was able to track down an instance of appendChild in…the new Google Analytics code. Thank you Google for breaking our site while we were trying to track traffic.

So I had to add in code to check for IE6 and display the old analytics code to those visitors.

Hope this helps others who are trying out the new Google Analytics code.
