First Communion hymns…

I made my first communion some 16 or 17 years ago now – wow doesnt time fly?

what i remember most about the day was the hymn we sung and though i only remember bits of it i have been searching for the rest of the lyrics ever since – if only so i can finally solve my curiosity… it was a very lovely hymn and i remember feeling overwhelmed with emotions and pride on the day singing it with my class mates.  If there is anyone out there who recognises the lyrics and can tell me what the hymn is called or supply the rest of the lyrics i would be so gratefull!

here's the only part i remember – i think it must be either the end of  a verse or maybe chorus:

thank you, thank you, thank you jesus, all i think or do or say, all my life may i remember, this my first communion day

  1. I sang the same hymn at my First Holy Communion (more than 40 years ago!) and it’s called My First Communion Day. Has ‘welcome, welcome, welcome Jesus, in my soul forever stay ..’ then I don’t remember the rest. Can’t find the music or the lyrics on youtube or any other site so far …. good luck with your search. If you find out more will you let me know? I want to use it for my daughter’s First Holy Communion in June this year.

  2. My little boy is making his First Communion next week 27th June 2010. I know it’s a year since this message was posted. But we are singing that hymn after my prompting – so I’ll post words soon x Joanna x

  3. Does it start something like : I wish my little heart to be,a soul so fair and gay …(Something something…. )to jesus may repose ,on my fIRST COMMUNION DAY?

  4. Thanks for all your replies.

Pam i think that must be the one! I did all those searches myself as well on the internet and came up with nothing.
Joanna thats great i hope he has a special day and please do post the lyrics!
Athanasius i dont think that is the same song.

it’s a sweet little song though – got a real nursery rhyme style to it, i think thats why i must have had it stuck in my head so long lol.

After hunting for the lyrics for 3 months, I finally found them. Thought I would share them on this although it may not be of use to you anymore. I love this hymn so much and my First Communion class love singing it.

Welcome, Welcome, Welcome Jesus – First Communion 2011

    Welcome, Welcome, Welcome Jesus
    In my soul forever stay
Joy and love my heart are filling
    On my First Communion Day.

I adore you, I adore you
    Hidden now within my breast
    Glory, honour, praise forever
To my Lord who is my guest

Bless me now my loving Jesus
All I think or do or say
All my life may I remember
This – my First Communion Day!

  6. Athanasius Kruger – I’ve been searching for the same FC Hymn –
    O Mary Mother sweetest blest
    From Heaven’s immortal bowers
To gather for a little child
    A bouquet of sweet flowers
I wish my little heart to be
    A cradle fair and gay
    Where Blessed Jesus may repose
    On my First Communion Day
    Where Blessed Jesus may respose
    On my First Communion Day

This is all I can remember and would love to have both the lyrics and music, if any one can help.

  7. How sweet to be a little child
    and hear The Saviour say;
Let little children come to Me
    and turn them not away.
What other day in all our life
Could be so sweet as this
When Christ bestows on children’s lips
    their First Communion kiss

  8. Catrina many thanks for posting this! i believe that must be the song! i shall have to write it down so that my kids can use it one day.

  10. “How sweet to be a liitle child ” has a second verse, viz
What other day in all our lives can be so sweet as this,
when Christ bestows on children’s lips their first Communion kiss –
    And yet another day will come as full iof joy as this;
My first and last Communion kiss will bring me equal bliss –
When Jesus o’er my pillow bends to soothe my dying tongue
The kiss of Christ will be as sweet as when my lips were young.

It was sung at my first Communion in 1953 at the Sacred Heart School in Hobart, Tasmania. I should love to know if there is any more, but I think that probably completes it.

  11. Yes I also remember the other one and think this Sweet Communion song follows on from O Mary Mother Sweetest Best, from thy bright heavenly throne….
How wonderful were those days of preparation when we learned all the prayers before and after Holy Communion. Why do we not teach children these prayers?
I can remember placing my head in my hands on the front of the pew and having “a quiet time with Jesus” and then the whole First Holy Communion group would recite the prayers – Acts of Faith, Hope and Charity.
Now it is all chit chat to everyone else except Jesus!!!

  12. Sung in 1960 by St. Mary’s Catholic School Children’s Choir in Johnson City, Tennessee for a First Communion mass.

Verse 1: (children’s plea to Mary)

    O Mary Mother sweetest mother,
    From Heavens immortal bowers,
Will you gather for a little child
    A bouquet of sweet flowers?
I wish my little heart to be
A cradle fair and gay (a cradle fair today)
Where Jesus can repose with me
    On my First Communion Day.

    Verse 2: (Mary’s Response-female solo)

My dearest child I can obtain
So bright a gift for thee,
That Jesus will delight to come
    Within your heart to be.
But oh, so often it will need
    The watering of a prayer.
Now tell me little one so dear
Will you promise to take care?

    Verse 3:… (children respond)

    Oh, Mary dearest mother
You know how frail I am
    Sometimes a careless, thoughtless child
    A weak and helpless lamb
But, oh if you will thus send down
    This precious gift to me
I promise but with your good help
    Well watered it will be.
    (repeat with changes)

But, oh if you will thus send down
    These precious flowers to me
I promise but with your good help
Well watered they will be. . . .

  13. We learnt this hymn for our First Holy Communion in 1972. The verses are different than the previous posters.
I have never forgotten the words we learnt then, forty years ago, and I have never found a nicer First Holy Communion hymn!

    Welcome, Welcome, Welcome Jesus
    In my soul forever stay
Joy and love my heart are filling
    On my First Communion Day.

    I will love you
    O my Jesus
I will love you Lord devine
Life will be one long Communion
I am Yours and You are mine

    Thank you, thank you
    O my Jesus
For Your love so great so strong
Take my hand in Yours sweet Jesus
That my soul may know no wrong

Bless me now my loving Jesus
All I think or do or say
All my life may I remember
This – my First Communion Day!

  14. First Communion Hymn – ” O MARY MOTHER SWEETEST BEST” (C. French)

    1. O Mary Mother, sweetest best; from heaven’s immortal bowers.
Do gather for a little child, a bouquet of sweet flowers.
I wish my little heart to be a cradle fair and gay, where blessed Jesus may repose
    On my First Communion Day.
Where blessed Jesus may repose on my First Communion Day.

    2. My little child, I can obtain so bright a wreath for thee.
That Jesus will delight to come, within thy heart to be.
I’ll give thee lovely charity more warm than roses glow.
I’ll give thee heavenly purity more white than lilly snow
I’ll give thee heavenly purity more white than lilly snow.

    3. The violet of humility shall yield a sweet perfume
And Jesus will delight to be, within thy little room.
But then remember dearest child, the blossoms that I give
require the watering of a prayer or they will cease to live
require the watering of a prayer or they will cease to live.

  15. Does anyone recall the ltitle of this old First Communion song? If you can provide the complete lyrics or song title, you will make my 92 year old mother happy.
    What she recalls:
Take me and keep me seeet Jesus
I give myself holy to thee.

    • Hello: This was my sisters first communion song that she sang at home to me and my younger sister. I cannot remember all the lyrics and I don’t know the name.
She made her first communion 61 years ago.

      What I remember is:

I am so happy sweet Jesus, because thou are coming to me, thy flesh and thy blood you give me, to nourish and sanctify me. Oh take me and keep me sweet Jesus, I give myself holy to thee.

I hope these lyrics are correct, I have been singing them all my life and I am 74 years old. I hope she recalls them.

      God Bless your mother.

  17. Jesus we adore You … In all of the Tablenacles throughout the world… In Your Heavenly Presence… We Praise You… We Bless You… We Thank You… We Honor You… We Glorified You… Heavenly King God Almighty Father … Forever and Ever… For Your Greater Glory… Amen

  18. Hi Felicity Millerd, although it’s implausible you or anyone else is able to get back to me in time, I and all my family would be extremely grateful for any more insight into the hymn that ends with

“The kiss of Christ will be as sweet as when my lips were young”

My grandmother loved this hymn and requested it at her funeral, which sadly is in a few days time.

  19. There was a hymn we used to sing for First Communions in the 1940’s —
“What other day in all our lives could be as sweet as this
When Christ bestows on childly lips
    Their First Communion kiss.”

I don’t remember any more of the song.
    Does anyone else remember it?

  20. I remember the beginning my First Holy Communion hymn. It was “On my First Communion Day I have have come Dear Lord to Thee. For I heard You gently say Come My Little Child to Me.” cannot remember the rest of it but have tried and tried to find it. My Communion was was 55 years age. This hymn has just disappeared. If anyone can recall it please let me know. Thank you.

  21. Valerie Hanlon: I received my first Communion in 1986 and we sang this song on the day. Beautiful words and I remember practicing with our music teacher Sr Consolata, God rest her soul.
I’ve seen different versions of the song posted but I remember we sung the version you posted.
My former school mate is preparing her daughter for first Communion this year and we were trying to recall the words to the song. Thanks for your post, we weren’t too far off but it’s helped a whole lot.
