 General Description:

This excellent work is a welcome addition to the many commentaries on the Our Father that have been written since the time of the Fathers of the Church. It is an excellent example of the lectio divina promoted by St. Benedict, and of the so-called "spiral contemplation" in the tradition of the pseudo-Dionysius and St. Thomas Aquinas (Summa Theologiae, II-II, 180, 6).

Fr. Hinnebusch reveals undreamed-of treasures that are contained in the Lord's prayer, thus demonstrating the truth of Tertullian's statement that the Our Father is "truly a summary of the whole Gospel." This book should be read slowly, with frequent pauses for meditation. It can be read again and again, and each time the reader will be able to "taste and see how good the Lord is" (Ps 34:9).

Only a scholar who has thoroughly immersed himself in the Scriptures over a period of many years could have written such a book. Its approach is not so much from the historical-critical point of view, although it has a basis in sound Scriptural scholarship, but more in the monastic tradition of lectio divina. I believe it will help modern readers find a contemplative approach to prayer.
