The court decision (Roe vs. Wade) legalizing abortion has had far-reaching effects. Many are surprised to learn that the decision did not deny that the unborn child is human. Does this mean that the government can declare some persons unfit to live? Another fact that surprises people is that abortion is legal throughout pregnancy, indeed, to the moment of delivery. There is now partial birth abortion, live birth abortion, the destruction of human embryos for research, and euthanasia. This growing lack of respect for life results from a logically inconsistent court decision that placed freedom of choice above the right to life. Although most people are opposed to abortion and other life destroying activity, there is a reluctance to proclaim the Gospel of Life. The Church reminds us that life sacred from conception to natural death, and challenges us to defend life.

Norma McCorvey, the plaintiff in Roe vs. Wade, has herself rejected abortion. Baptized into Christ’s Church, she is now a dedicated worker in the pro-life movement. On this 30th anniversary of the Supreme Court decision legalizing abortion, let us join Norma, let us be Pro-life Today and Always.
