The Mother of the Saviour is not just another pious book about Mary, but perhaps the finest summation of the Catholic Church's teaching about the Mother of God ever penned-especially because it is written by a pre-eminent authority, with brevity, economy and absence of novelty or speculation or "merely metaphorical expressions." 

 

From the pen of probably the 20th century's greatest theologian, the book is suffused with the spirit of faith and inspired by love begotten of sanctity. It is "an exposition of the principal theses of Mariology in their bearing on our interior life." "The doctrines proposed in this book are not personal ones," the author's aim being "to give what is most commonly held by theologians-especially those of the Thomistic school." (Author's Preface). The book is aimed at increasing in us our love for and devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary by teaching us more about her. Thus, it is primarily theological and educational-in the conviction that it is only by increased knowl-edge of Mary that we will grow to love her more.

Divided into two main sections, The Divine Maternity and the Plenitude of Grace and Mare, Mother of All Men: Her Universal Mediation and Our Interior Lift, the book first explores every aspect of the role of Mary and the graces given her as a result of the Divine Maternity. In the process, the author shows how she is greater in grace than all angels and all men combined, which fact is the basis of her unparalleled position in the Church and of our great devotion to her.

Garrigou-Lagrange then explains Mary's role in relation to us: How she is the Mother of all men and of each individually; her role as Co-Redemptrix of all men; her power of intercession for us and in the distribution of all graces; her Queenship of Heaven and earth and the honor of hyperdulia we pay her, which is best expressed in True Devotion to Mary; why True Devotion to Mary is such a certain means of sanctification; and finally, why the human race should be consecrated to Mary for the peace of the world.

But the book contains much, much more. In fact, it is nothing short of a comprehensive yet concise statement of all that the Church teaches about Mary. Indeed, it is difficult to imagine that anyone having read this masterpiece of Fr. Garrigou-Lagrange will ever again question the exalted position of Mary recognized by the Church or ever thereafter denigrate or question her stature in the order of nature or of grace.
