 General Description:

This is an exact reprint of Benziger Brothers 1962 (USA) edition.

It will also be the ONLY reprinted missal available in complete conformity with the final revisions made by the Holy See in 1962 to the traditional Roman Missal. So unlike the other “1962” missal being offered in the USA, our edition will include:

  • ST. JOSEPH'S NAME IN THE CANON (added in November 1962),

  • the AD LIBITUM PREFACES (added in July 1962 and which includes the restored Advent preface!),

  • the PRO ALIQUIBUS LOCIS section specifically arranged for the USA DIOCESES per the 1962 liturgical calendar (added in December 1962) [click here to view pdf of header page for this section],

  • and the original imprimatur by Cardinal Francis Spellman.

The famed Benziger Brothers were one of America's premier printers to the Apostolic See before they went bankrupt shortly after the Second Vatican Council.  This faithful reprint of their altar missal is a testament to their labors which were not in vain and are of service to American Catholics in the 21st century as they were 40 years ago in the 20th.

At 1290 pages, and measuring 83/8” x 11¼” (approximately 2¾” thick), this is a major project, nevertheless every effort is being made to match Benziger’s renowned quality and will include such features as:

    • hard casing in red (or green) durable bonded leather (wears better than leather and requires no special care)

    • ornate gold-embossing on both cover boards and spine

    • thick cover boards and reinforced spine with decorative hubs (as shown above on the original)

    • poly-grosgrain colored ribbons finished with bows (prevents fraying)

    • strong midi-braid leads bridging ribbons to the spine (protects pages and life of ribbons)

    • flexible bonded leather tabs in matching cover color and black

    • original quality black and red text throughout (all exact scans of the original pages)

    • sturdy sewn binding and endsheet construction

    • non-acid missal-quality paper (nearly the identical specs Benziger used)

    • double-gilded page edges

    • a slip jacket for proper storage of your investment

Here are the imprimaturs in the 1962 Missale Romanum printed by Benziger Brothers from which this edition has been reprinted:

  • For the typical edition of the missal [page facing verso page]:  Cardinal Francis Spellman (New York), Feast of St. Leo the Great [April 11], 1962 [NB: this does not look like the typical imprimatur; it is simply a decree that the book conforms with the Vatican's typical edition, which in itself is the approbation, or imprimatur]; it typically includes the bishop's coat of arms printed on the page.

  • Missae Propriae Dioecesium Statuum Foederatorum Americae Septentrionoalis section [second to last black tab] (pp 1-12; NB:  page numbers restart for each section after []'s pagination):  Cardinal Francis Spellman (New York), October 10, 1962 (found on page 12 with SRC approbations and protocol numbers).

  • Missae Speciales section [last black tab] (pp 1-12):  Cardinal Francis Spellman (New York), December 19, 1961

  • Praefationes Particulares A S. Rituum Congregatione Aliquibus Dioecesibus Concessae section ["insert" in back of missal after first set of blank pages] (pp 1-24):  Cardinal Francis Spellman (New York), April 8, 1963 (yes, this date is correct, as this section was literally inserted into the back of the nearly completed missal which was not made available until the following month of May).
