Conception Abbey

 General Description:

This image by Sr. Marie Paul, OSB, is a synthesis of two classical icons. The first is the Crucifixion; the second is Christ the High Priest. The Crucifixion image has been used from earliest times. A lesser-known icon is that of Christ the High Priest. The depiction originated in the Balkans in the fourteenth century and spread throughout the Orthodox world. Christ is shown on the cross fully vested, both Sacrifice and Intercessor. He is flanked by Mary His mother and St. John the Evangelist.

This icon reproduction is mounted on wood, in the traditional style of the Christian East.

About the iconographer: Sr. Marie-Paul, O.S.B. is part of a small community of Benedictine nuns who live in a convent near the Mount of Olives in Jerusalem. The community's work is of two kinds - they provide room and board for young girls who attend the convent school and they write beautiful icons. Sr. Marie-Paul is the community's master iconographer and she follows the classical Byzantine style. Conception Abbey (Missouri) is her exclusive supplier of reproductions in the USA.
