 General Description:

Ethelred Preston is one of Fr. Finn's 27 Catholic novels for young people.  Resemblin a Catholic version of Charles Dickens' stories, or even of Tom Sawyer, these books were read by hundreds of thousands of young people in the late 19th and early-to-mid 20th centuries.  Their quaint turn-of-the-century language is part of the charm of these stories and of Fr. Finn's own brand of humor.  After young readers (or hearers) have gotten into his style, they find it hilarious.

In Ethelred Preston, a new student shows up at Henryton boarding academy-a crude and boastful fellow who makes the mistake of defying the boys there to "take him in."  A parallel drama emerges as Earl, another boarding student, struggles with the question of religion and a promise made to his dying mother.  As the story unfolds, Fr. Finn manaes to cover a host of topics, including honesty, dishonesty, greed, cursing, Baptism, mothers, honor, morality in playing pranks, justice, charity, friendship, leadership, temptation, Confession, the Holy Eucharist, anti-Catholic slander, the True Religion, pride, humility, bankruptcy, etc.

Events take some surprising turns in this story, as Fr. Finn once again presents the reader with a great picture of the All-American Catholic boy!
