 Our Description

An excellent and recommended book for the jubliee Year of the Priest (June 2009 - June 2010).

 General Description:

By Fr. George William Rutler

As the title of the book implies, this is not a biography of St. John Vianney but is a reflection on the great saint's life and work as it can be applied to our present age. Fr. Rutler "interprets" the Cure of Ars for the modern Catholic. Insightful, informative, interesting, provocative and thoughtful. A good read indeed.

"Everyone who thinks Vianney already well known will find not simply new information, but what has new meaning for each discoverer. That meaning may well differ for each reader. The descriptions of the Curé's encounters with Satan and "his lesser angels" and of the hours in the confessional were my own personal crucial rediscoveries. The retreat by Pope John Paul II given at Ars is an extraordinary bonus in this extraordinary work.... An important, fascinating work by an important, fascinating author.
- John Cardinal O'Connor

"In the Curé of Ars, we have an incomparable guide. He remains for all an unequalled model both of the carrying out of the ministry and of the holiness of the minister."
- Pope John Paul II

"This is a very unusual, perhaps even a unique biography. Father Rutler does more than give the "facts" about the life of the Curé of Ars. With bold strokes, like a master Chinese calligrapher, he captures the spirit of the age in which he lived, unveils the sanctity of a humble parish priest, and gets to the heart of what it means to be a priest--not just then, but now and for all time. Along the way Father Rutler brilliantly shows that the Curé of Ars is a priest for all seasons."
- Kenneth Baker, S.J. Editor, Homiletic and Pastoral Review

Fr. George Rutler, a graduate of Dartmouth and the Angelicum, is the pastor of Christ the Saviour Church in New York City. His previous books include Beyond Modernity, Crisis of Saints, and Coincidentally among others.

Profile
Farm hand who in his youth taught other children their prayers and catechism. Ordained in 1815, though it took several years study as he had little education, was not a very good student, and his Latin was terrible. Assigned for a while to Ecully. In 1818 he was assigned to the parish of Ars, a tiny village near Lyons, which suffered from very lax attendance; he began visiting his parishioners, especially the sick and poor. Spent days in prayer, doing penance for his parishioners. Gifted with discernment of spirits, prophecy, hidden knowledge, and working miracles. Tormented by evil spirits, especially when he tried to get his 2-3 hours of sleep each night. Crowds came to hear him preach, and to make their reconciliation because of his reputation with penitents; by 1855 there were 20,000 pilgrims a year to Ars. Spent 40 years as the parish priest.
