 General Description:

With Us Today: On the Real Presence of Jesus Christ in the Eucharist
by Fr. John Hardon, S.J.

The years following the Second Vatican Council have witnessed a crisis of faith in Christ Jesus' Real Presence in the Eucharist. Lacking the faith that Jesus is truly, physically present in the Eucharist, Catholics today are often unable to understand the purpose of the Mass and of the ordained priesthood. Fr. Hardon discusses the serious implications of this decreasing faith in the Real Presence and how it is linked to the crisis in the priesthood today.

In With Us Today, Fr. Hardon,

  • examines the history of Eucharistic doctrine, and the heresies that began in the tenth century and expanded in the Reformation period,
  • concisely explains Church teaching about transubstantation—the complete change of the substance of the bread and wine into Christ's Body and Blood,
  • reminds us that at the Last Supper Jesus instituted the Eucharist so that He can nourish us with His Flesh and Blood and be physically present to us always,
  • explains how the Eucharist is a source of grace for all of us, and
  • explores how our devotion to the Holy Eucharist will transform all aspects of our relationship with Jesus.

With Us Today, reminds all Catholics of the incredible gift of the Eucharist, and how each us of must share our faith in the Real Presence with others and be a part of a new era of Eucharistic devotion.
