General Description:
The original 'A Soul Brought to Heaven' was painted by Bouguereau in 1878. Between 1875 and 1877, Bouguereau mourned the loss of his sixteen year old son Georges, his wife Nelly, and eight month old son William-Maurice. Thus, 'A Soul Brought to Heaven' was not conceived as a tribute to a specific family member, but it was painted while the artist was still in mourning. It is in addition, an oddly comforting image. It is not tied to any one set of religious belief. However, it conveys a tenderness that counteracts the deep human apprehension of what may happen to us after death.
