General Description:

All saints are unusual because only the unusually strong, dedicated and resolute ever become canonized saints. But if, among this group of unusual people, we can pick out a few really unusual or unlikely saints, St. Aloysius Gonzaga would surely be numbered among them.

Born the eldest son of the Marquis of Castiglione, he was heir to an ancient line of nobility and was expected, as such, to carry on the family tradition. Though well suited to his role, he chose instead to renounce the world and become a Jesuit. This meant he could never even become a member of the hierarchy, which his family would otherwise have surely seen to in his life as a priest.

No. He renounced everything: His name, his titles, his heritage, his fame, his glory, his luxury - to become a Jesuit priest. But remarkably, he began his life of renunciation at the age of six so that he never lost his virginal purity, despite the temptations of his day. Of a strong will and a fiery temperament, he nonetheless molded himself into a docile child of God.
