"This is not a new hook on prayer to read or to meditate, nor is it a book of prayers to recite. It is a guide for praying. "Characteristic aspects of prayer are re-examined, taken up again today with a sense of new-found joy: the immediate encounter with God and the awareness that the Spirit prays within us; listening to the Word that it may be rooted in the heart, and the Eucharistic sign as the reminder of a Presence; prayer's link with life and the contemplative attitude; prayer as a meeting with the Father `in secret' and the community which welcomes the risen Christ when it gathers together in his name; silent adoration and the role of the body, which we would be tempted to consider an obstacle in seeking God; the function of a sacred image or icon and the prayer of the name placed on our lips, in our mind and in our heart."(from the Introduction)
