The premiere release by Slavyanka brings together its founder and a first-rate musical and supporting package. The excellent introduction summarizes the development and character of the musical tradition, even giving the bibliography of the view presented. Presentation of the text is the best we've seen so far: columns across the page in Slavonic (printed in Russian) transcription, English, French and German of both introductory comments and the texts themselves. The selections are varied and well-ordered, well-known and obscure, spanning traditions from the 13th to the 20th century, from the chant traditions to pure art music using liturgical texts.
