The Martyrdom Of Father Campion and His Companions by William Cardinal Allen. First published in 1582, this edition is a facsimile of the single and unique copy found in the British Museum and republished in 1908. It is a brief history (primarily eye-witness accounts) of the martyrdom of St. Edmund Campion and his twelve companion priests. [Publisher’s Note: This is one of the most extraordinary books I have ever read (and re-read and re-read) and I would venture to say that you will agree once you see and read this most precious and beautiful edition. It is with great happiness I now finally have the opportunity to republish this rare book in a special bonded leather edition. dlm] The editor of the 1908 edition includes a very informative and helpful fifteen page introduction, which comfortably places the reader in the correct century and refreshes memories of this most crucial time in Church history. (Except for the Introduction, this classical edition was printed in mid-18th century English, but this only adds to the enjoyment of reading this book. The spelling may seem a little odd, for example words like [street] streat, [escape] eskape, [months] monethes, [go] goe, [chief] cheefe, [clock] cloke, [heretic] heretike, etc.) The author was St. Edmund Campion’s Superior-Abbot (as well as for the other martyr-priests) and he personally witnessed many of the events recorded herein. At this most desperate time for the Catholic Church, Cardinal Allen devoted life, fortune, influence, everything to the building up of the seminary at Douay in which “priests and pastors” were taught, including these martyrs. It would be hard indeed to speak too highly of Cardinal Allen. With the exception of St. Edmund Campion, there was perhaps no one among the English Catholics of his day who can be placed higher. This book has been translated into Latin, Spanish and twice into Italian. Its substance is very well known and it is considered in effect to be the germ or seed of all the martyrologies that have been written about the sufferers under Queen Elizabeth.
