"Love one another, as I have loved you." John 15:12
The heart-rending plea of Jesus, "I Thirst" is seen alongside every chapel cross of the Missionaries of Charity. This scriptural saying became the hallmark of Mother Teresa's mission. For Mother understood clearly that Jesus thirsts for our love in order that we may begin to thirst for His Life-Giving Waters. For our hearts were simply created for Divine Love. And so, this fine artwork is an unfolding collage of four life portraits of her spiritual development. At the beginning, we behold this youthful woman surrendering to the call of Christ. For Jesus reveals that it is only He who is able to break the paradox of human suffering, the crown of thorns, and offer the hope of eternal life. Filled with fortitude, the new foundress will deny Jesus nothing. Mary, ever the Mother of the Poor, will nurture her in the gift of prayer. For in the footsteps of Jesus, one will gather flowers of varying color, some of scarlet filled with sorrow, some white with the joy of love. At the closure of her journey, she receives the pure lily, having attained the transfiorming union with her beloved. Even her aging profile takes on the shape of the land she came to clearly call her own, India.
