The Gift of Christmas
Item Number: 247
Rev. Jude Winkler, OFM Conv.
Christmas is one of the greatest Christian feasts. It is also a most happy time. It is the day when we celebrate God's great love for us. We rejoice because God sent His only Son into our world to be born as a baby in Bethlehem.
Christmas takes its name from the expression "Christ's Mass." It recalls the Mass that the community offers to celebrate the birth of Jesus. The English language is unlike most of the other European languages in this. They give a name to this day that is based upon the words "to be born." Thus, in Latin we have Dies Natalis; in Italian, Natale; in Spanish Navidad; in French, the Latin form is softened into Noel.
This book is intended to help you celebrate Christmas with greater understanding, devotion, and joy. It is divided into three parts. (1) Preparing for Christmas shows how Jesus fulfilled the promises God made to the Chosen People. (2) The Christmas Story tells the story of the events that surrounded the birth of Jesus. (3) Celebrating Christmas shows the various customs with which Christmas is celebrated around the world.
May this book help all who use it to celebrate each Christmas more devoutly and more joyously with every passing year.
Imprimatur: Patrick Sheridan, Vicar General, Archdiocese of New York
