A historical picture of the early church in pagan Rome, illustrating the glories of the Christian martyrs as exemplified in the lives of the fair young Virgin, St. Agnes; the heroic soldier, St. Sebastian; the devoted youth, St. Pancratius; etc. This volume is not historical, rather it consists of a series of pictures than of a narrative of events. Richly illustrated with over 66 illustrations, some of which are from original drawings by Joseph Blanc.
About the author: Nicholas Cardinal Wiseman (b. 1802, d. 1865) was the first Archbishop of Westminster, England.

Translations of it were published in almost every European language, and the most eminent scholars of the day were unanimous in its praise."
