"Au revoir,my niece, and thank you," Con said, bending down to give her a kiss. "You are a brave child. So! Goodbye now, and wish me well."
"Oh, I do!" she replied. "Please, please be careful." When he had climbed out of the window at the end of the building, she stood there watching. For all his height and size Con was as agile as an animal; he seemed to know exactly where to put his feet and hands and in a few moments of quick climbing he had reached a point from which he was able to leap down on a lower roof. He landed quietly, but at that moment the moon came out again, shining full on him. To her alarm, Catherine heard a shout. Someone, somewhere, had seen him.
Con scrambled on all fours to the top of the lower roof and then, passing a moment to get his balance, he walked swiftly along the ridge of it. He was walking the rounded coping like a tightrope.
Catherine, watching intently, was startled by a gasp behind her. She turned and saw Princess Yolande, wrapped in a frilly dressing gown, with her beautiful golden-red hair loose on her shoulders. She caught hold of Catherine and they stood by the window together, gazing out.
"Mon Dieu! If he doesn't fall and break his neck, he'll be shot!" Yolande said in a frightened whisper.
"Surely they wouldn't shoot at the Prince?" Catherine said. But at that very moment a shot rang out.
