The Beuronese school of art, developed at the Abbey of Beuron in Germany during the later part of the nineteenth century, sought a more dignified alternative to the romantic emotionalism that dominated religious art of the day. Incorporating such diverse influences as the hieratic otherworldliness of Orthodox iconography and the geometric precision of ancient Egyptian mural paintings, the Beuronese style imparted a renewed sense of transcendence to church art, making it a medium by which the observer might comtemplate holy truths without distractions from the medium itself. It was not art for its own sake, but art for a higher purpose.
