For ancient and Jews and modern Christians alike, the book of Exodus is one of the most treasured books in all of Sacred Scripture. The Exodus event – in which God’s people were called to freedom from slavery in Egypt – was the pinnacle moment in all of history for the people of Israel. If we read this story looking through the lens of Christ and the Church, we see that more than just seeking to free His people physically from the domination of Pharaoh, God desired to free His people from a far more sinister tyrant – sin and fear. For Christians, then, the story of Exodus should have even deeper meaning. As He often does, God uses the story of Israel to teach us how to live our own story in Christ. At its heart the book of Exodus is about God’s love for His people and how that love calls each of us out of our own bondage – whatever that might be.
