1917: Red Banners, White Mantle is not just another history of the First World War. Dr. Carroll unveils for us "a contest that embraces Heaven, Earth, and Hell , whose protagonists include the devilish revolutionary Lenin, the demonic Rasputin, the saintly Charles, last Emperor of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and above all Our Lady of Fatima, who appeared with a message of penance, conversion, and peace to three children in Portugal, who themselves knew nothing of the titanic struggle of the earthly powers in Flanders' fields. 1917 was truly an annus mirabilis, a year of wonders, of human blunders, madness, and desperation, of demonic energies unleashed in the world, yet for which the divine solicitude was revealed in the appearances of Our Lady at Fatima and confirmed with the miracle of the "dancing sun."
Warren H. Carroll holds his Ph.D. in history from Columbia University and is Chairman of the History Department at Christendom College, which he founded in 1977, serving as its president until 1985. Since 1975 he has been at work on a six-volume history of Christendom, of which the first volume, The Founding of Christendom, was published in 1985, the second volume, The Building of Christendom, in 1987, the third volume, The Glory of Christendom, in 1993, and the fourth volume, The Cleaving of Christendom, in 2000. Dr. Carroll has also published five other books of history: Our Lady of Guadalupe and the Conquest of Darkness; The Guillotine and the Cross; Isabel of Spain, the Catholic Queen; The Last Crusade; and The Rise and Fall of the Communist Revolution.
