 Our Description

(Louisa) [1591-1660]. Born in Paris. She wished to become a nun, but on the advice of her confessor, married Antony Le Gras. After his death in 1625, Louise spent the rest of her life helping St. Vincent de Paul and cooperating with him in establishing the Sisters of Charity. The Sisters took their vows for the first time in 1638 and Louise remained their Superior until her death. She was canonized in 1934 and is patron of social workers. Her feast is March 15.

Though she considered a religious vocation from an early age, her ill health kept any house from taking her. She married Antony LeGras, an official to the queen, in 1611. Widowed in 1625. Spiritual student of Saint Vincent de Paul. With Saint Vincent, she founded the Daughters of Charity in 1642, receiving Vatican approval in 1655. Founded the Sister of Charity, took her vows in the order, and served as its superior until her death. Spiritual guide for laywomen's groups.
