Gift of Love
Bradley James

From the cover:

I had been volunteering with Mother Teresa's Sisters in Los Angeles for two years when I received a phone call from them telling me, rather than asking me to pick them up and take them to the airport.  There was an urgency that I dared not refuse.  I knew that this was a special occasion for them.  When we arrived at the gate, I saw the Nuns in the familiar blue and white saris get off the plane.  The Sisters were so happy to greet each other.  They talked together as we walked to find a plane to sit.  I quickly found out that the Sisters were meeting on their way to Cuba.  The tiniest Sister turned to me and said, "You must be Bradley.  I am so happy to meet you.  I'm Sister Nirmala."  I knew then that the reason they brought me to the airport was to meet the extraordinary and holy woman I had been hearing and asking about.

Sister Nirmala was one of the first women to join Mother Teresa in her work amongst the Poorest of the Poor in Calcutta.  She and Mother founded the Missionaries of Charity Contemplatives in 1976 and was elected to succeed Mother Teresa as Superior General of the Society of the Missionaries of Charity.

It was such a joy and a bit overwhelming to meet her that I remember not wanting to say anything so the Sisters could enjoy her presence.  She already knew that I was a big fan of hers so she came over to me and wanted to know how I heard about her.  I told her that I had read everything there was to read about Mother Teresa and that I had heard about her from the Sisters.  I kept bugging them for more stories about her.  Then I asked her how she had heard about me.  She said that she had heard about me in Calcutta.  She knew I was a musician and composer and asked me why I had never written any music for the Sisters.  I answered that nobody had asked me.  She said with her big smile, "I am asking you.  Write something to Mother's words."  I told her that I would love to but that I would need Mother's permission first.  She handed me a tiny piece of paper and asked me to write to Mother right away and that she would give it to Mother herself.  Sister Nirmala left with the others and I forgot about the letter until I received Mother's permission several weeks later.  Over the years as I continued to write music to her words and prayers, Mother continued to give me her permission and encouragement.  On another occasion, I asked Sister for a special intention that I could pray for, just for her.  Dear Reader, please join me in praying for "Peaceful freedom for Cuba."

I have sung some of these songs for Mother and have heard the Sisters sing them all over the U.S. and Mexico.  I know they sing them in their convents all over the world.  I never forget that they began with Sister Nirmala's little request.  Mother wrote in her first letter of permission that they are my gift of love.  May they measure up in some small way to the many, countless gifts of love given to me by Mother, Sister Nirmala and the Missionaries of Charity throughout the world.

My Jesus, bless your own Missionaries of Charity!!
