Art and the Silent KillerPurchase Information
Your Price: $17.95 Format: DVD General Description: Fr. Loya addresses the problem of “either/or” when it comes to men looking at women. Typically men either look at women and treat them as an object of lust or look away from women and thereby treat them as an object of temptation. Either way men see women as objects rather than the persons whom God created them to be. Fr. Loya demonstrates, through works of art and his own sketches, how men can begin to see women through the peace of the interior gaze. This approach not only helps to combat the problem of pornography, but helps with the constant barrage of images from the billboards, media and magazines as well. This insightful and entertaining presentation will bring hope and freedom to men and women alike. About the author/speaker: Fr. Thomas J. Loya is currently the pastor of Annunciation of the Mother of God Byzantine Catholic Church in Chicago, IL and the Eastern Catholic spiritual advisor for TOBIA. Before entering the seminary he earned a degree and pursued a career in commercial art and design, after which he worked for a Church design firm. He completed his studies for the priesthood in Pennsylvania and Rome and was ordained in 1982. In 1993 he added to his Bachelor of Fine Arts by earning a Masters in Counseling and Human Services. He has worked on the iconography both of his present parish and of St. John's parish in Solon, Ohio. In addition to his duties as a pastor and iconographer, Fr. Loya has served the Church in youth and young adult ministry and as an artist and design consultant. He has directed many retreats and has been a guest speaker at conventions and at World Youth Day 2002.
Fr. Loya says that pornography is such a serious problem in our culture that statistically it is safer to assume someone is addicted rather than to believe he is not. Even if a man is not addicted to pornography, he still needs prayers because is constantly surrounded by "soft porn". The solution to this catastrophic situation is found in art. Fr. Loya says that to look at the human body as an artist does is to look at the human body as God does. Being made in God's image means that our bodies reveal something about the nature of God when viewed properly. In fact, one of the major problems in society is not that we show too much, but that we show too little. This presentation by a celibate Byzantine priest is one of the best I have seen. Fr. Loya's keen insight and understanding of John Paul II's Theology of the Body make this a talk that everyone must see. A little uncomfortable for the viewer at times, Fr. Loya Full Review...
