 Our Description

The Conversation of Faith and Reason
Modern Catholic Thought from Hermes to Benedict XVI
by Aidan Nichols, OP

The question of Faith and Reason is still central to Catholic thought today, because liturgy lies at the intersection of Faith and Reason. The book has extreme relevance today as Catholics continue to come to grips with moral relativism and conscience in an increasingly secular world where at times reason and science are pitted against religion. Just as secularism and modernity can tear at the fabric of faith, liturgy pulls faith and reason together.

Aidan Nichols charts the development of the topic through the key figures who set the terms of the debate between faith and reason where official Catholic teaching is concerned, and whose theologies influenced modern theological thought as the  twentieth century drew to its close in the encyclical letter Fides et ratio (1998) of John Paul II.  Starting with Georg Hermes, Nichols looks at the work of Anton Günther, Louis Bautain and fideism, the magisterial interventions of Gregory XVI and Pius IX, the return to scholasticism with Joseph Kleutgen and Leo XIII, followed by Etienne Gilson, Maurice Blondel and the philosophy of action, apologetics from Bondel to Baltahasar, and a final synthesis in John Paul II and Joesph Ratzinger (Benedict XVI).

Aidan Nichols, OP is a lecturer in the Cambridge University Divinity Faculty, Prior of Blackfriars Cambridge, and Visiting Professor of Systematic Theology at the John Paul II Institute. He holds a BA, and an MA in History and a Dip.Theol. from Oxford University. He holds a Licentiate in Sacred Theology (STL) from the English Dominican Studium and a Doctorate in Philosophy from Edinburgh as well as an STL from the Pontifical university of St. Thomas, Rome (The Angelicum). He has been a lecturer in the History of Christian Doctrine and Ecumenics at the Angelicum (1983-1991), and Assistant Catholic Chaplain to Cambridge University (1991-95). Aidan is one of the most prolific theology writers of theology in the English language in the world today and has published on many topics including more than 25 major books and numerous articles in systematic, sacramental and ecumenical theology.
