Years ago, you might have found people bringing their own copy of the Missal to Mass.  Over the years, it seems to have lost some 'steam' with Catholics.  Part of that shift might be the prevelance of the tissue paper thin yearly books containing the readings and music for the parish.  I had years of just listening as the Scriptures were read during Mass and occasionally would utilize the disposable books at church.  But, as I grow deeper in my faith, I was having a serious tug towards having my own Missal.

This item received 4 stars overall. The Saint Joesph Sunday Missal is a Great Help when Preparing for Mass

I have really enjoyed having my own, personal missal.  I have always liked to prepare for Mass by going over the week's readings before Sunday.  The Saint Joseph Sunday Missal makes it easy.  It has a complete calendar including every Mass and Holy Day through 2029.  There is a short discussion preceding each entry which allows me to read about the intended theme of the week.  This also includes some excellent reflective questions for quiet meditation.

Our parish does provide pew missals.  They look great on first Sunday of Advent but they take a bit of a beating.  We have four services each weekend, so by Midnight Mass on Christmas Eve, the pages are curling, covers are bending and many have dog eared pages.
