 Our Description

"This book is . . . my personal search for 'the face of the Lord." - Pope Benedict XVI.

This is Pope Benedict XVI's first book since his pontificate began.

Who is Jesus? According to the wildly popular book and film, The Da Vinci Code, Jesus was merely a human figure whose original message was distorted by his followers.

Not so, argues Pope Benedict XVI in this inspiring well-argued, and thoughtful new book. Benedict sums up two thousand years of Christian insight about the person and work of Jesus Christ. The early Christians did not misinterpret Jesus. Indeed, their understanding of Jesus is the one that makes the most sense based on the historical evidence.

"Who do men say that I am?" Jesus asked his disciples. The answer to that question is as crucial and timely today as when it was first asked two thousand years ago. Jesus Christ remains the pivotal figure of human history.

In his first major book written as Pope, Benedict XVI looks at various answers to the question of Jesus' identity. He shows in a "theological narrative" how the Christ of the Gospels, the Jesus of the Church's faith, is the genuine Jesus of history. He presents Jesus as someone we can know personally, and someone who knows and loves us. And who sacrificed himself for our salvation.

Jesus of Nazareth also continues the conversation about the relationship of Christianity and other world religions. Benedict XVI affirms the truth found in other religions, but he also expresses the Christian conviction that Jesus, the Word of God made flesh, embodies the fullness of truth, God's immense love for the world.

This item received 5 stars overall. Discovering the person of Jesus Christ in the Gospels

Pope Benedict XVI writes a personal reflection on the life of Christ in Jesus of Nazareth, not a dogmatic treatise. That said there is nothing in Jesus of Nazareth that goes against his Catholic faith; instead, Pope Benedict XVI rescues Jesus from current (and sometimes popular) trends to view Jesus outside of His depiction in the Gospels. This book is a return to the Gospels to rediscover (and recover) the true identity of Jesus. It reads more like a meditation than a textbook.

Unlike some of the Holy Father’s other works which, though very good, are very rough reading for theological beginners, Jesus of Nazareth is accessible to the average reader. There are a few places where one with a more robust theological background could get more out of the reading (and there is a least one Full Review...

This item received 5 stars overall. Pope Benedict XVI Beautifully Expounds the Gospels

When I learned that Pope Benedict XVI was writing a book on Jesus in the Gospels, I couldn’t wait to read it. Having read it, I can’t wait to read it again. Benedict’s latest book, Jesus of Nazareth, is a theological and pastoral work that effectively reintroduces the faithful to the Jesus of the Gospels. From Jesus’ baptism to the Transfiguration, the Holy Father provides a biblical portrait of Our Lord based on a coherent canonical reading of Scripture.

In this beautiful book, Benedict writes as theologian, pastor, teacher, and spiritual father. However, as he explains in the foreword, "this book is in no way an exercise of the Magisterium but is solely an expression of my personal search ‘for the face of the Lord’ (cf. Ps. 27:8). Everyone is free, then, to contradict me." Throughout the book, Benedict attempts to demonstrate the reliability and reasonableness of the Gospels, simultaneously arguing that the Jesus of hi Full Review...
