The Grunt PadreOur Description This is the definitive biography of Fr. Vincent Robert Capodanno, a chaplain for the Marine Corps during the Vietnam war. Greatly beloved by so many who served under his spiritual care, Fr. Capodanno died on the field of battle giving the last rites to the US soldiers he served so well. He was just declared a “Servant of God” by the Vatican, which is is the first major step toward the canonization of a saint. Fr. Mode recounts the story of Capodanno’s life growing up in America, and shows how he prepared himself so well to serve God and his fellow man with such deep love and courage. He truly embodied the ideal of “dying to yourself” in the service of others, and inspired that ideal in all those around him. Fr. Mode includes moving first-hand testimonies by those who knew and served with Fr. Capodanno. Illustrated.
This is the story of a Catholic Priest and a Naval Chaplain who served his Marines but it is also their stories that make it so real. Do you know of a Vietnam veteran struggling with his Faith after witnessing the horrors of war? Do you have a son or nephew serving in the military and facing an uncertain future in a troubled world? Here is a book to help them see how a Christian man lives and dies in service to God and country.
Rev. Daniel Mode Father Daniel Lawrence Mode grew up in a Navy family. His father, a Navy Captain, brought his family to places as diverse as Korea, Virginia, Alaska, and Hawaii. Fr. Mode's brother rose to the rank of Lieutenant Commander. Fr. Mode himself is a commissioned Navy chaplain. The author's education includes a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy, with advanced degrees in theology and church history. While studying history at Mount Saint Mary's Seminary he stumbled upon the research threads that led him to uncovering the remarkable Fr. Capodanno story. Besides Fr. Mode's reserve duty as a Navy chaplain, he currently serves as a pastor of a large Catholic church in Alexandria, VA.
In A Nutshell The Grunt Padre chronicles the sacrificial life and heroic death of Fr. Vincent Capodanno, a Maryknoll missionary who served the United States Marine Corps in Vietnam. The story of Fr. Capodanno is the story of a hero and a saint. Capodanno served his marines with more than a Sunday sermon and administration of the sacraments. With an unwavering dedication, he lived among them and suffered alongside them, taking on their hardships as his own, and serving them in every way his means afforded him. In this way, Capodanno modeled the life of Christ for the marines and won the friendship of all, regardless of rank or creed. The marines loved Capodanno and affectionately called him their "Padre." On September 4, 1967, Capodanno gave his life attempting to rescue a wounded corpsman. He died as he had lived, in prayer to God and in selfless service to his fellow man. We owe many thanks to Fr. Daniel L. Mode for preserving the inspiring story of Fr. Vincent Ca Full Review...
