 General Description:

Goops and How to Be Them: A Manual of Manners for Polite Infants

An amusing way to share the world of manners (or lack thereof!) and dignified behavior with children.

"The Goops they lick their fingers and the Goops they lick their knives:
They spill their froth on the tablecloth - Oh, they lead disgusting lives!
The Goops they talk while eating, and loud and fast they chew;
And that is why I'm glad that I am not a Goop, are you?

Reminiscent of the dark humor of Roald Dahl and Babbette Cole, this book on manners was an instant hit when it was first published a century ago and will still appeal to today's most sophisticated readers.

About the Author - Frank Gelett Burgess was born in Boston in 1866. After getting a degree from M.I.T. in 1887, he moved to California to teach at the University of California in Berkeley. While there, and later in New York and Paris, he wrote many humorous novels, poems and stories, many of which are still in print, including Goops and How to Be Them, More Goops and How Not to Be Them, and The Purple Cow. Burgess died in 1951 in Carmel, CA.
