 Our Description

Pope Benedict XVI had a powerful encounter with over one million youth at World Youth Day in Cologne, Germany, in August, 2005.  He also had important seperate meetings of deep significance with Jewish leaders, with Muslim leaders, and a third Ecumenical meeting with Protestant leaders.  This book includes all the texts of his talks to the youth over that five-day period, as well as his talks to these other groups in Cologne.

The Pope's inspiring words to the young were enthusiastically received and comprise an important message for youth everywhere - and indeed for all followers of Christ.  This 20th World Youth Day had a new point of reference: Pope Benedict XVI.  IT was the first one that Pope John Paul II could not attend.  But this collection fittingly begins with John Paul's closing talk at WYD in 2004.  Yet Pope Benedict stamped this World Youth Day with his own personal style, with his gentleness and joy, and profound words about Christ's love that the youth responded to with great exuberance.

The theme of this great gathering was "We Have Come to Worship Him."  Throughout these talks and encounters with the youth, Pope Benedict XVI reinforced the meaning of this theme by leading us to adore the Child who is God, whose love renews and transforms the whole world.  Radiating from this book is a sense of deep joy over the beauty of faith, the love of Christ and of our life in Christ.

This book reinforces the conviction that, in the person of Pope Benedict XVI, God has given the Church a great Teacher of the faith, and also a great Pastor who knows the way that can lead us to intimacy with God.  His special charism seems to be his ability to combine universal openness to others with a strong Catholic identity, and a clear and comprehensive witness to the truth of Christ with the gentleness of fraternal charity.

"If we let Christ into our lives, we lose nothing, absolutely nothing of what makes life free, beautiful and great.  Only in this friendship is the great potential of human existance truly revealed....Open wide your hearts to God!  Let yourselves be surprised by Christ!... Open the doors of your freedom to his merciful love!

-Pope Benedict XVI

"Free of tired ideologies that have plaqued our age, Pope Benedict XVI calls young Christians to a life rooted in faith, love, and humility.  His counter-cultural message begins with the human person.  If the Pope has started a revolution, this is its battle cry: one of love, faith and divine power.  Don't miss Benedict's transforming call."

-Raymond Arroyo, EWTN News Director, Author, Mother Angelica, New York Times Best-Seller

"Benedict XVI fills the rome of Bishop of Rome with a warmth, wisdom, good wll and joy that honors his great predecessor, but that also mark the papacy with a renewed energy and focus.  These collected talks from World Youth Day in Cologne capture a unique man of God at a unique crossroads for the Church.  They make for invaluable reading and reflection."

Charles J. Chaput, O.F.M. Cap.      Archbishop of Denver, CO
