 Our Description

Bout the book -
Whether you are surrounded by the peaceful tranquility of an empty chapel or the anxiety driven mad dash of the New York City rush hour, God is always there. He's there in the stillness. He's there in the chaos. Our call is to seek Him, find Him, and serve Him. As Archbishop of New York, Timothy Dolan knows only too well the many faces of Christ. Known for his devotion, dedication, and sense of humor, Dolan uses Doers of the Word to share a unique combination of simplicity, practicality, and guidance to give our faith a daily dose of meaning and application. No matter our agenda for the day or the week, Dolan masterfully combines insightful commentary and personal stories with snippets of Church history, lives of the saints, and Catholic teaching to inspire holiness through the daily details of ordinary life.

The author -
New York's Archbishop Timothy M. Dolan is the former rector of the North American College in Rome and author of numerous books including To Whom Shall We Go and the best-selling hardcover edition Priests for the Third Millennium (Our Sunday Visitor). St. Peter's question, To whom shall we go? (John 6:68), is his episcopal motto.

This item received 4 stars overall. Short, refreshing, and inspring pieces for everyday life.

Doers of the Word: Putting Your Faith into Practice by Archbishop Timothy M. Dolan contains delightful short essays, thoughts, quotes, and other tidbits that inspire, teach, and reassure.

I am a busy woman, and it's too easy to feel like life is being taken over by the mundane and that I have no time for God among all of the boring, challenging, time-consuming, or exhausting tasks that fill my time. After the first day I found myself rereading the very first piece in the book again and again. I've read it every day and am seriously considering having it written up and posted in my house. It's a reassuring and inspring reminder that everyday is something new and fresh. It gives me peace to know that even if I didn't find time yesterday God has given me a fresh start on a new day and I can find the time today.

This item received 5 stars overall. Good meditations for busy people

Archbishop Dolan went from the peace and quiet of Wisconsin to the hustle and bustle of New York City.  In Doers of the Word, he writes very eloquently about how he has found that God is present both in the stillness of meditation and in the busy-ness of every day life.   This idea really struck a chord with me as I struggle with finding quiet time to reflect and think (and, let’s be honest, sometimes just stare at the wall and wonder about 4 year old boys) in the middle of busy days.

The book is a set of meditations written over time by Dolan as he spent time in his private chapel.  They are short and written in an easy-going, humble, yet shepherdly sort of way, and contain insight and wisdom that I found very helpful in my life as a wife and mother.  He did not write specifically to one set of people, but his thou Full Review...

This item received 3 stars overall. Interesting but some is a stretch

When I first picked up Doers of the Word, I expected to find a book covering the theology and practical nature of putting our faith into practice, as this is what the cover suggests.  However, it is composed of short reflections divided into seven "chapters".  Each reflection ends with a bit of history, a quote, some trivia, a poem, or a prayer.  The topics of the chapters range from Christ to the Communion of Saints to the Virgin Mary.
It is quite obvious from the book that Archbp. Timothy Dolan has a thoughtful, prayerful faith.  Many of the reflections grow from his own experiences and more than a few are quite inspiring.  His aim isn't so much to tell people how to live their faith but to show how others have lived their faith and to inspire the reader to follow these examples.  He uses a mix of humor and earthiness Full Review...
