When defining Catholicism, many first turn to its unique practices and characters--the Mass, the sacraments, Mary, priests, and the Pope. Others point to its intellectual traits--its distinctive apologetics, theology, and philosophy. In his new book, Catholicism: A Journey to the Heart of the Faith(Image, hardcover, 304 pages), Fr. Robert Barron explores these typical characteristics but doesn't stop there. He looks through many more lenses to reveal the core of Catholicism. Barron is not just concerned with what's good and true about the Catholic tradition but also what's beautiful. The Catholic faith is not just a matter of the mind and the soul but of the body and the senses. Therefore if we want to fully understand "the Catholic thing", we need to gaze on art, history, culture, Full Review...
It is very difficult for me to review a book like Fr. Robert Barron's Catholicism: A Journey to the Heart of the Faith. Years in the making and heralded by a healthy dose of promotion across the Catholic corner of the internet, it can be hard to separate the hype from the thing itself. I also have the nagging feeling that I'm not Fr. Barron's primary audience for this work. I say that less as someone who works full-time for the Church, and more as someone who prefers systematic theology to philosophy. (Fr. Barron's masters degree is in philosophy and he is an unabashed admirer of St. Thomas Aquinas, whose life and writings are frequently cited in the boo Full Review...
Catholicism, by Father Robert Barron, was written as a companion to a study program that is based the DVD series by the same title. Even so, it stands on its own quite well. While seasoned Catholics already know most of the stories and the basic information in the 279 page hardcover volume, the delivery of the message is new, and as with any subject - reviewing the basic facts repeatedly helps with mastery. I am also a firm believer in taking advantage of a great teacher when the opportunity arises. One of Father Barron's greatest gifts is his ability to tell a story. Full Review...
Catholism is a wonderful book for new catholics, cradle catholics or those friends and family members that are wanting to know all about Catholism. Did you know this book is based on the film series? I didn't this would be a wonderful bible study for any catholic church group. Each chapter of the book aligns with the DVD series.
Catholicism: A Journey To The Heart of The Faith has devoted a chapter each to The Mass and Mary. The chapters dives deep into the steps, symbols and meaning of mass. He also spends a whole chapter telling the reader all about Mary the mother of God. This is the best book about the catholic faith. I loved how much I learned from it, I thought I knew this stuff already but he taught me so much! This book isn't just a history book about the Catholic Church and Faith it is abo Full Review...
First, and to the point: this is an excellent book, the new standard to give to the seeker, the RCIA participant, the college student, the non-Catholic spouse, the skeptical friend, even the lost Catholic. It is slender and readable, accessible, creative, and thorough. It is the fruit of both an accomplished scholar and a popular writer. I highly recommend it.
Barron’s book invites us to see the forest of Catholic faith rather than the individual trees, so to speak. His approach is deeply sacramental, by which I mean not only his interest in the fact that Catholics celebrate sacraments, but also his ability to use discreet images and examples as windows into the mystery of Catholic faith. The key, for Barron, is beauty. He tips his hand near the end of the book, narrating his own experience as a student, of first seeing the great rose window in the cathe Full Review... |
