Bilbo's JourneyDiscover the Christian meaning in The Hobbit
Joseph Pearce

In Bilbo's Journey go beyond the dragons, dwarves, and elves, and discover the surprisingly deep meaning of J.R.R. Tolkien's classic novel The Hobbit.

Bilbo's quest to find and slay the dragon Smaug is a riveting tale of daring and heroism, but as renowned Tolkien scholar Joseph Pearce shows, it is not simply Bilbo's journey, it is our journey too.

It is the Christian journey of self-sacrifice out of love for others, and abandonment to providence and grace.

In Bilbo's Journey: Discovering the Hidden Meaning of The Hobbit you will relive the excitement of Tolkien's classic tale, while discovering the profound Christian meaning that makes The Hobbit a truly timeless adventure.

This item received 3 stars overall. Reaches for Conclusions But Still Worth a Read for Tolkien Fans

Bilbo's Journey purports to tell us the hidden meaning of The Hobbit. I haven't read Tolkien's letters but I do recall his famous quote about his stories being just stories, not allegory, etc. However, one's mindset informs one's creations and Tolkien was a devout Catholic so there's more to The Hobbit than meets the eye.

Pearce can be a good guide, but he falls prey to that habit I've noticed when trying some of his other writing. His utter certainty about how to interpret the story and his utter insistence that you see it his way have turned me off in the past. He's better about it here than in other places, but yet, I see it still.

That doesn't mean the book is not good. It just means that one must read it with that tendency in mind and in a forgiving mood so you don't get hung up on Pearce's foibles.

Overall, I found the book to be rather scattered. Instead of simply talking Full Review...
