 General Description:

This brief introduction to fourteen major literary works in the area of spirituality is a practical guide to the knowledge, love, esteem, and practice of the Catholic faith. A theological reflection on a number of great texts in Catholic spirituality, this work demonstrates their critical relevance to living the faith in the contemporary world today. These works include: The Confessions of St. Augustine, The Cloud of Unknowing, The Little Flowers of St. Francis, Julian of Norwich’s Revelations of Divine Love, Catherine of Siena’s Dialogue, The Imitation of Christ, The Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius, The Ascent of Mount Carmel by St. John of the Cross, St. Teresa of Avila’s Interior Castle, St. Francis de Sales’ Introduction to the Devout Life, The Practice of the Presence of God by Bro. Lawrence, True Devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary by de Montfort, de Caussade’s Abandonment to Divine Providence, and St. Thérèse of Lisieux’s Story of a Soul. Belief in God’s love, the importance of prayer, detachment and holy indifference, the redemptive role of suffering, the instrumentality of the Church, and the communion of saints are among the many threads which are to be found in the variegated patterns of holiness described in these classic works.
