The Catholic priesthood faces many challenges in today's society.  It has suffered from a decline in vocations, it faces attacks against the practice of celibacy and doctrine that only men are called to priestly life.  The Catholic Church also has had to deal with the revelation of widespread clerical abuse in the sixties and seventies and even more recently that has given critics legitimate sources of anti-Catholicism.
