During the Spanish Civil War, following a vocation to the priesthood was a good way to end up a martyr. 20% of the country’s clergy – 6,832 priests, nuns, brothers and bishops were killed by the Communists during the war.
Even so, a young priest served his flock and Opus Dei grew to become a world-wide movement of Catholic laity and priests.
